“I will offer this, the most challenging probation that’s imposed, is always in a case of a drug addiction, possession, or use kind of case. Because if a person is using, then the vulnerability is always there. ‘Where am I going to get my next fix? Can I manage without? Are there programs that are going to help me stay sober?’ And so, if someone is struggling and has not yet gotten to the point where they know they cannot continue to live that way, then the vulnerability remains. I think the sad reality for people who are addicted, and it’s a substance addiction, is that the next hit is what’s important. The next fix. Where can I get my next dose? And to get to that dose, people will do almost anything. Heroin is probably the most pernicious of all the drugs that are out there for use, from my experience in a general way. And it’s because addiction to heroin, for the addict, it’s no longer about getting the high that comes with getting the dose. It is what happens to avoid the trough.”

Let’s look at it this way. Let’s suppose you’re a sports junkie. And you can’t wait to see the playoff game this evening, or the Super Bowl if that’s it. You can get to the Super Bowl and you can be fine. And you’re not going through withdrawals until then, you have the anticipation of getting that. But for the addict, and especially for someone in heroin, it’s not about getting that high, it’s about what happens after you get that high. You want to have the fix because you don’t want to have the drop-off, the trough. That’s really the brutal part. I’ve had clients, you can just see and sense the fear they’ve had about what happens with the drop-off.”
