“When somebody comes into your office, they found you on the internet, they had a referral. And so, they’re looking for help. What makes… and I ask everybody the same question, what makes you different from the guy next door, or across town, or, you know, somewhere else? You’ve been practicing for how many years?”
Kirk Tarman– DUI Criminal Defense Attorney – San Bernardino County, CA
“20, 22 or so. 1999.”

“Okay. So, 20,22,23 years. Math here. You’ve obviously spent, obviously a good portion of your life in this profession. So, what makes you different than the guy next door? To help that person feel comfortable with you?”
Kirk Tarman– DUI Criminal Defense Attorney – San Bernardino County, CA
“That’s a good question, there’s a few, there’s a few. And I think it kind of ultimately boils down to the fact that I really do care. And I know it doesn’t, it sounds a little trite, but when someone comes to me, I’m not in it, out of the gate just to get their money. I’m going to give them, like a straight scoop. I’m not going to try to scare them, and I’m not going to try to sugarcoat it. I’m going to give them what I think I can do for them. And I always try to tell them like that, no matter what, my clients always get through it.
I have people coming in here and their lives it’s just overwhelming for them. And after they leave, I get chills, super happy when they go, ‘oh, I feel so much better just after having talked to you’. So, I think there is the first thing. And I’m just going to say like it is. I give a shit. A lot of these attorneys, I don’t think they care, you know? They’re really in it for the money. They really just want to take the easy route out. And they don’t have what I would consider the internal drive for quality. Which means, I get the money, but I’m not going to just then go in there and take the easy path. I am going to go for the long shots. I’m going to put the time and energy into it.
I’ve got DUI’s, that have lasted two years because I care about the result. Because I have an internal drive to do as much as I can for my clients, while other people are just like, look, I’m running a business. I can only go to a hearing for five times, and then I’ve got to be done with this thing. It doesn’t matter for me. I’m going to do whatever it takes to try to get that best result. It doesn’t guarantee a great result, but it definitely…it seems to have helped so far. So, I think it’s…those are a couple things.
The second thing is, look, when I was younger and I got buddies who are a little rough around the edges, you know. I’m not the most angelic person either. So, I’ve done some stuff that I’m not super proud of. And I have this kind of mentally like, look, I’ve done some crap in my life that I have a little bit more empathy, I think, towards these people who come into this office, because it’s not something that is so far afield, or so foreign to me that I can’t go like, look, that could have been me, that could have been one of my buddies. So, it makes me, I connect with people a little bit more, because I think I’m kind of normal. I’m not a square, but I’m not, like, I’m not addicted to drugs. I’m a bit nerdy. I think that those things, the fact that I think…
I have a great staff. So, while I’m working in the courtroom, the staff is still being productive. I’m not this one man show, where these guys, some of these guys are in court, and nothing’s being done. The DA’s office has not been contacted. Motions aren’t being generated. Investigation is not being done. On the top of the pyramid. I’ve got great staff. We’ve got another great attorney. Super common sense, very charismatic gal, who’s working for me. So, in my mind, a lot of these attorneys have got…they’re either a one trick pony that can do one thing, they can schmooze, or they’ve got one guy, because all they can do is motions, and nobody likes him. You know, we kind of…we have the full boat. We have a quiver of arrows that we can… we have a lot of options that’s available for us.
